ArtWorks for Milwaukee Hosts 3rd Annual “Art in the Neighborhood” Gallery Night Event

Milwaukee, WI. – ArtWorks for Milwaukee, Inc., a nonprofit organization that prepares underserved teens to enter Milwaukee’s workforce by utilizing the arts as a method to teach employability skills, will host its third annual “Art in the Neighborhood” Gallery Night Event on Friday, January 21st, 2011, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm. The free event is open to the public and will be held at ArtWorks’ studio/offices, located at 706 South 5th Street, Milwaukee. Light refreshments will be served and a selection of artwork will be available for auction and sale. All proceeds will support current and future programming and operations that benefit Milwaukee County teens. ArtWorks’ youth Apprentice Artists will be present at the event to discuss and promote their artwork with the public, as they personally represent “Art in the Neighborhood”.

“This is a great opportunity to give back to our community and help teens that truly need our training,” said Board President, Vanessa LaCoste. “ArtWorks selects youth that are having significant trouble in school, may have a disability, and are lacking a mentor, and provides an opportunity to help them be successful in the real world of work through our paid art apprentice programs. Our unveiling event will celebrate the hard work our apprentices have accomplished.”

The “Art in the Neighborhood” Event will unveil and auction the work of the Apprentice Artists in the following fall 2010 programs:

  • • The Positive Influence Project
Under the guidance of Lead Artist Kasia Drake-Hames, the “Positive Influence Project” gives accolades to Milwaukee residents who make a difference in our communities. Apprentices had to identify a “person of positive influence” from their neighborhood and approach that person about being the subject of their mixed media portrait.
  • • “Safe Place Mural”
Lead Artist Katie Van Velzer worked with a team of apprentices to create powerful anti-gun/gang/drug messages through stunning arrays of color and mixed media. This project was accomplished in support of Safe & Sound, Inc. and their Crime Strategy Initiatives that leverage youth-led interventions designed to positively influence other youth in our communities.

ArtWorks provides paid artist apprentice positions for teens with significant employability barriers to develop crucial soft job skills that empower creativity and confidence, broaden their perspectives and prepare them to enter the workforce. ArtWorks helps Milwaukee youth that need it most. “To date, ArtWorks has offered over 55 successful and diverse arts-based projects, and has hired and trained over 300 apprentices,” said executive director Meghan Koven. “Since 2007, 100% of responding former apprentices have stayed in high school, and 51% went on to later secure a job. ArtWorks’ core commitment is to help Milwaukee youth become productive contributors to our city, no matter what type of career they wish to pursue.”

ArtWorks for Milwaukee, Inc. is a local 501(c)3 non-profit that utilizes the arts to train employability skills to Milwaukee teens who need it most. Our paid youth apprenticeships promote teamwork, tolerance for diversity, project management, and prepare young people to successfully enter the workforce in any industry. The first award came in the category of “Tactics: Media Relations” for the agency’s creation of the “Wisconsin Gangster Tour,” an online video, map and feature article about the gangster hideouts around the state, including locations used in the movie Public Enemies with Johnny Depp. Working on behalf of the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, B+L’s media relations and web content campaign garnered coverage in newspapers across the country, including the New York Times, Chicago Tribune and Dallas Morning News, as well as on AP, Yahoo, Google and MSN. The agency’s media outreach resulted in $5 million worth of exposure, with more than 100 news stories and over 24,000 visits to the department of tourism’s website. In addition, numerous gangster-related tourist sites reported a significant increase in visitors.

The agency won again in the category of “Tactics: Social Media, One-time special event” for launching Lakefront Brewery’s Wheat Monkey Ale. B+L employed a wide-ranging social media program to raise awareness for the Wheat Monkey Ale launch parties. Elements of the program included a Twitter and Facebook account operated by “the Wheat Monkey,” viral video, social media release, guerilla marketing, special tasting events and media relations. The campaign helped make Wheat Monkey Ale the brewery’s best-selling beer at all of Milwaukee’s 2009 summer festivals and the company’s second best-selling brand overall.
